Thanks for the question, just the top will be fine towards the derailleur but a guard completely covering the drive sprocket at the gearbox will save any snags. Where are the footpegs positioned?

We aren’t quite sure where the foot pegs will be yet, but I have another question. Will we be able to have some small smartphone battery packs to run a Raspberry Pi off?

Yes, a separate small power supply for the Raspberry Pi (or any other controller, telemetry, communications etc) is fine. The installation of which will be subject to scrutineering to ensure safety so think about protecting the battery from impact, running wires etc.
Keen to see more of the build, it sounds great!
